It may have only taken a few seconds to pass Ordinance 2012-10 during Tuesday night’s Phillipsburg Town Council meeting, but it’s significance was years in the making.
In its first reading the ordinance will rename Frost Avenue from the intersection of Elder Avenue to Corliss Avenue in honor of Michele Broubalow, the longtime former municipal clerk and business administrator, who passed away May 15. She was 56.
The ordinance will be voted on for final approval at council’s next meeting.
In other business, the council heard from three separate residents about distressed or neglected properties in the town, some of which have been foreclosed upon.
While expressing his understanding at the frustration neighbors have with tall grass, weeds, and general lack of maintenance, Mayor Harry Wyant noted that the town is somewhat limited in what they can do besides following “a lengthy process” to maintain properties that are owned by a bank or an individual.
“This problem is not just in Phillipsburg,” he said, adding that the town is looking into hiring additional individuals, possibly college students, on part-time basis to help cut grass, pull weeds and trim shrubs at properties across the town this summer.
