Road crew hits gas line, forces evacuation

CLINTON, NJ -

A road crew hit a gas line Wednesday morning, forcing some businesses to evacuate as a precaution.

Janice Kovach, mayor of Clinton, NJ, said a contractor working on East Main Street in the town struck a gas line shortly after 11 a.m.

Duane Bourne of Elizabethtown Gas said the company was notified around 11:15 a.m. that a one-inch service line had been damaged by a third party near East Main and Leigh streets.

Bourne said crews turned off gas to repair the line and are making repairs. He said only one building on Leigh Street is without gas service but service will be restored as soon as repairs are made.

Some area businesses were evacuated as a safety precaution.

Kovach said the fire department is located near the intersection of East Main and Leigh streets and firefighters were on the scene shortly after the incident.

The contractors and gas company workers are making repairs,Kovach said.

East Main Street is closed near Leigh Street.
