PHILLIPSBURG, NJ -

The Phillipsburg Police Department is looking for someone who stole a utility transformer, which may contain a hazardous substance.

On Monday, an officer noticed a small fire on Howard Street while on patrol.

Near the fire were two downed electrical wires. Closer examination showed that a utility pole had been cut down and someone had stolen a transformer from the pole.

Jersey Central Power and Light advised that the transformer contained oil that had polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which can be hazardous and have been known to cause cancer.

Officers said some of the transformer oil was on the ground.

Phillipsburg Fire Department and the Environmental Protecion Agency were contacted and came to the scene.

Phillipsburg Police are still investigating the incident.
