On September 11, 2001, four people from Warren Co., N.J., left for work in New York. They never came home. Tuesday night, the county unveiled a memorial in their honor.
"Robert C. Miller."
They're names that only exist in memories now.
"Bruce A. Reynolds."
And pictures.
"Bruce Edward Simmons."
And for Flo Aaroe, in her heart.
"He brought out, excuse me, the best in everybody," she said. "He was a rotten kid, but everybody loved him!"
Aaroe's son, Bruce Simmons, was working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on 9-11.
"I got home and there was a message from his wife, and she said, "Flo, Bruce called and he said, 'Call mom and tell her not to worry, because it was a pilot error,'" she remembered. "And then, bingo. A few minutes later, and she called me hysterical."
On the 11th anniversary of 9-11, Warren Co. dedicated a new memorial to the four natives who died in New York, as well as police and emergency workers killed on duty. The memorial features a beam from the Trade Center, and well as a depiction of the Twin Towers with a timeline of the day's events. It's located at Warren County Community College on Route 57.
"It's beautiful they've worked very very hard on this," said Aaroe.
It took years to build this memorial, and there is still work left to do.
"We have many, many bills yet to be paid," said Warren County Fire Marshal Joseph Lake, Jr. "Part of the difficulty in building this memorial was raising the funds needed with these difficult economic times."
Organizers still hope to raise about $15,000 to add bronze plaques and extra lighting.
