Fled from Hackettstown to Byram Township
Douglas Umstead, 39, of Andover, N.J., has been jailed after racing away from a police officer in Hackettstown, N.J.
Just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, a Hackettstown officer spotted a vehicle on Route 604 that had been involved in a theft at the Walmart in Mansfield Township.
The police officer stopped the vehicle on Route 604 near Pine Street and asked for the driver's credentials. When the officer returned to his patrol car, the suspect took off. He drove north on Route 604, going through a school zone at a high rate of speed. The officer drove after him, but eventually ended his pursuit.
The suspect soon was apprehended by police in Byram Township, which is in Sussex County northeast of Hackettstown.
He was charged with eluding police, reckless driving and failure to use a turn signal.
He was committed to the Sussex County Correctional Facility. Bail was set at $10,000.
