The story of 10-year-old musician Jahmir Wallace has inspired an act of goodwill by the Phillipsburg Performing Arts Association.
Wallace, a student at the town's Green Street Elementary School, was born without arms and has become a trumpet player in the school's band.
At Tuesday night's town council meeting, the PPAA presented Wallace with a certificate of merit, as well as a new trumpet.
"Although a beginner musician, his positive attitude and can-do spirit of accomplishment is inspirational to all who meet him," the PPAA said in its presentation. "His outlook on life and the arts should be a lesson for all of us."
The organization also honored Wallace's teacher Desiree Kratzer, awarding her with a $600 account at Dave Phillips Music and Sound to help support the Green Street music program.
The money came from a number of unsolicited donations prompted by news coverage of Wallace's story.
