U.S. Sen. Rand Paul highlighted a rally for New Jersey U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan.

Paul told a crowd of about 200 Friday afternoon that Lonegan will uphold the conservative libertarian principles they both share.

Paul said Lonegan will help shrink the size of government, oppose government surveillance and continue his opposition to military intervention in Syria.

Paul is urging New Jersey Republicans to help expand the party and get more people to the polls on Oct. 16.

Paul said new people are key to building a Republican party that wins in New Jersey and around the country.

Paul slammed Lonegan's Democratic challenger, Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Paul said Booker has done little to help Newark and is too liberal.
