A plane that had just departed from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey was forced to return there after the flight crew smelled smoke in the cockpit.

Republic Airlines Flight 4872 had 22 passengers and four crew members aboard when it took off around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The Q400 aircraft, which was being operated as a United Express flight, was headed for Raleigh-Durham Airport in North Carolina, but it soon returned to Newark and landed there without incident around noon.

The passengers soon switched planes and traveled to North Carolina later Wednesday

Peter Kowalchuk, a spokesman for Indianapolis-based Republic Airlines, said maintenance crews were working Wednesday afternoon to determine what caused the smoke.
