Family: Only inmate to blame for prison guard's death
Victim's co-worker committed suicide after death, officials say
The family of a corrections officer who was killed in the line of duty at a federal prison near Scranton is urging his co-workers not to blame themselves.
Eric Williams' father, Donald, has released a statement directed to the corrections officers at the prison. He said the family doesn't blame anybody for his son's death except the assailant who attacked him.
Donald Williams said he released the statement after prison officials told him one of his son's co-workers had committed suicide. Officials have confirmed that an officer at the prison committed suicide.
Eric Williams was working in a housing unit when an inmate using a homemade weapon attacked him last week at the Canaan penitentiary in Waymart, about 20 miles northeast of Scranton, authorities said.
