HARRISBURG, Pa. -

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has a new, free mobile app meant to make driving through the state a breeze.

The purpose of the 511PA app is to provide people traveling through the state better information before and during a trip.

The mobile app, which can be downloaded free of charge on iTunes or Google Play stores, is available for both iPhone and Android platforms.

The hands-free and eyes-free application plays audio alerts with traffic incidents or slowdowns within the radius the user selects when the app is activated.

It provides free travel alerts for nearly 40,000 miles of road PennDOT maintains, as well as the Pennsylvania Turnpike and select New Jersey and West Virginia roadways.

Users can check the application before they travel to view traffic speed, cameras and travel alerts.

PennDOT secretary Barry J. Schoch said the application helps customers have the most current travel information available before and during their trip and it helps provide better mobility in Pennsylvania.

Drivers are reminded not to look at or call any of 511PA's services while driving.
