A multi-alarm fire caused extensive damage to an apartment complex in Lancaster County on Friday.

The fire started shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday when a maintenance worker was trying to ignite a pilot light inside the complex in the 800 block of Dawn Avenue in Ephrata, officials said.

Surrounding streets were closed as firefighters battled intense flames and smoke, as well as below-freezing temperatures and snow on the ground.

The fire heavily damaged much of the building, which contains multiple apartments.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
