State officials say the Pa. Treasury is working to return thousands of dollars in unclaimed property to African American organizations and institutions.

State Treasurer Rob McCord says the department wants to return $93,000 in unclaimed funds to the rightful owners this February, which is Black History Month.

He's asked his team to identify the property that belongs to organizations like the NAACP, African Chamber of Commerce, Union of Black Episcopalians, National Society of Black Engineers and the United Negro College Fund.

The funds may also belong to historically African American institutions of higher education like Cheyney and Lincoln universities, along with fraternities and sororities.

“Our Return Team is eager to reunite these funds with the rightful owners so they can be used to continue improving the lives of and providing opportunities for African Americans across the Commonwealth," McCord said.

Groups can visit the Pa. Treasury web site to find out if any of the funds belong to them.
