ASHLEY, Pa. -

Attention blood donors: the American Red Cross needs your help!

The organization says it's facing a looming blood shortage, and is in urgent need of all blood types.

According to the Red Cross, donations are down about 8% over the past 11 weeks, resulting in 80,000 fewer donations than expected. Officials also say because Independence Day fell on a Friday, there were about 1,000 fewer blood drives than usual.

The Red Cross says all blood types are needed, especially types O negative, B negative and A negative. Platelet donations are also needed.

Individuals who are 17 years of age or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate. To make an appointment, you can call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit the Red Cross web site.
