A Philadelphia charity plans to donate $15 million to the city's public and private schools in an effort to raise achievement.

The William Penn Foundation's donation to the Philadelphia School Partnership will be spread over three years and focus on performance of low-income students.

The Philadelphia School Partnership will award grants to public, private and charter school as they aim to eliminate or overhaul 50,000 seats in low-performing schools.

Foundation president Jeremy Nowak tells The Philadelphia Inquirer he hopes the donation helps the partnership attract other donors to help reach its $100 million goal.

Grants from the partnership are used to help schools train staff, buy equipment or expand facilities.
