Father charged with murder in death of infant in Upper Moreland
A Montgomery County man is now behind bars on murder charges in the death of his two-month-old daughter.
Police and prosecutors announced Tuesday the arrest of Edward Doyle on charges of third degree murder and endangering the welfare of children.
Police and paramedics were called Sunday morning to the Wellington Apartments on Horsham Road in Upper Moreland Township for the report of an unresponsive baby.
The infant was found on a bed in the master bedroom with red swelling on her forehead and bruising and cuts on the bridge of her nose, authorities said.
The baby was rushed to Abington Memorial Hospital, where she later died.
An investigation revealed that Doyle, 28, had been drinking heavily Saturday night and early Sunday morning, said officials, noting that he was caring for his two children while drunk.
Doyle told investigators he tripped and fell onto Makayla, but the baby's multiple broken ribs, skull fractures, and injuries to her nose didn't match up with that explanation, said Dr. Isidor Mihalakis, a forensic pathologist.
The girl's death was ruled a homicide.
Doyle was committed to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail. He's due back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 5.
