POTTSTOWN, Pa. -

A Montgomery County firefighter who fell down an elevator shaft while investigating a blaze is in the hospital recovering.

Officials said that just before 4 p.m. Saturday, crews were called to the three-story Eagles Home Association building in the 300 block of High Street in Pottstown.

Firefighters were checking out the elevator and when the doors opened, one of them fell more than 12 feet down the shaft. Officials said the firefighter fell after losing his footing on broken concrete.

The unnamed firefighter was rushed to Reading Trauma Center.

Fire officials said the injured firefighter had an operation on one of his arms and is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another day.
