Hillary Clinton told an international gathering of female activists on Tuesday that more women must have the courage to lead.

The former secretary of state spoke at a women's conference at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia.

The elite liberal arts school is hosting a two-week gathering of the Women in Public Service Project. About 50 women from 30 countries are attending the leadership symposium.

Clinton launched the initiative in 2011 to help guide and inspire women in countries undergoing political transitions or emerging from conflicts.

One of its goals is for women to hold 50 percent of public sector jobs worldwide by the year 2050.

Clinton stepped down as head of the State Department early this year. Supporters are encouraging her to run for president in 2016.
