Montgomery County Sheriff
NORRISTOWN, Pa. -

Montgomery County Sheriff Eileen Whalon Behr is resigning to become director of police operations at Drexel  University in Philadelphia.

Behr was appointed to become the county's first female sheriff in 2011.

"This all came about rather quickly," said Behr in a news release  Friday. "Drexl University offered me the position and I finally decided to accept it.  It has been a very difficult decision to make.

“Accepting this position with such a prestigious university in the city will allow me
to get back to what  is very close to my heart, which is working closely with the
community.

“I love working with and mentoring young people, and coming up with new solutions to improve neighborhoods.”

Behr is a former Whitemarsh Township police chief.

No date was announced for Behr's resignation.

She said it was an honor to serve county residents and that she will be giving up the sheriff position with deep regret.
