PALMER TWP., Pa -

Authorities in Palmer Township, Northampton County, said someone is posing as an IRS agent to scam people.

The Palmer Township Police Department said that numerous people have reported they have received phone calls from a person claiming to represent the IRS. The caller says that back taxes are owed and if not paid, they will go to jail.

Those who received the calls say they are instructed to purchase gift cards and transfer the money to the caller, by giving them the gift card number. They reported the caller can be very persistent and demanding.

Police are warning residents to be on alert for these calls and to not purchase any gift cards or transfer any money by other means to the IRS. They are also warning residents not provide any personal information.

The IRS does not make phone calls.
