Police are warning residents of a scam involving a phone caller pretending to be a representative of the PECO electric company.

Police issued the warning following a phone call in which a caller claiming represent PECO told the owner of a Montgomery County business her utilities would be shut off unless $1,500 was paid within the hour.

The caller then claimed that PECO's billing system was not fully functional, and only Green Dot Money Pak prepaid cards would be accepted as payment.

The business owner then obtained $1,500 worth of prepaid cards, called the fake PECO representative back, and provided him with the information necessary for him to obtain payment from the cards.

Police said the public should be aware that PECO sends a 10-day notice for delinquent accounts. Anyone who receives a similar call should call PECO and confirm the status of their account before providing any financial information to a caller, police said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call State Police in Skippack at 610-584-1250.
