About four percent of employees at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center in Montgomery County have been furloughed, officials announced Wednesday.
The hospital released a statement saying fewer patients are seeking hospital care, so staffing levels are being adjusted.
"We are hopeful that this temporary change will position us to respond as patient volume increases and avoid the need for more significant, permanent cuts," said Debra Bennis, director of marketing and community relations.
Impacted employees are being reassigned to other open positions, when possible, and the furloughs should not affect patient care, officials said.
The hospital said it's also closing an eight bed transitional care unit.
"Patients currently receiving care in the unit will continue to do so until their course of care is complete and they are discharged," Bennis said.
