NORRISTOWN, Pa. -

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is posting photos, names and last known addresses of defendants wanted for non-payment of child support on its Facebook and Twitter pages.

The already-implemented initiative was announced during a news conference Monday afternoon.

“We rely heavily on the public’s help in providing tips to help our deputies find these deadbeat parents,” said Sgt. Joanne Plasterer of the sheriff's office. “A lot of people are on social media. So we have to be out there too.”

Adding a social media strategy allows the office to reach a wider audience at a faster pace, an idea inspired by Sheriff Russell Bono to track down deadbeat parents for the sake of their children.

The initial postings been up for about three weeks and already have generated several tips.

“We plan to update our Facebook and Twitter pages every week with five new defendants,” said Plasterer.

Sgt. Adam Berry of the sheriff's office said  these efforts are meant to strongly encourage deadbeat parents to turn themselves in to avoid the embarrassment of continued media coverage.
