A beloved Philadelphia bakery is celebrating a century in business with -- what else? -- birthday kake.
Tastykake is marking its 100th anniversary on Tuesday.
The maker of treats such as Butterscotch Krimpets, Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes and fruit-filled pies has scheduled festivities at its Navy Yard headquarters.
Employees also plan 100 deliveries of tasty sweets to charities and first responders throughout the city, which, along with the state, has declared Feb. 25, 2014, "Tastykake Day."
In addition, the snack company has introduced a limited-edition Birthday Kake Cupcake -- a festive confetti cake with chocolate-flavored icing and multi-colored sprinkles
Tastykake made 100 cakes on its first day of business in 1914. Now, it produces nearly five million cakes, doughnuts, cookies and pies each day.
"Operating any business for 100 years is no piece of cake, even for a bakery," said Paul Ridder, Tastykake president. "We believe our success comes down to a simple recipe -- delicious, fun snack cakes, a focus on quality and freshness, an outstanding team, and, of course, our fans. Tastykake would not be here without the 100 years of support we've received from our community."
Tasty Baking Co. became part of Georgia-based Flowers Foods Inc. in 2011.
