Massive industrial fire breaks out in Bucks County
50,000-square-foot building goes up in flames
Fire crews battled a massive industrial fire in Bucks County early Tuesday morning.
The 3-alarm fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. at the Arbonite Corporation, 3826 Old Easton Rd., in Buckingham Township, near Doylestown, officials said. It burned out of control until about 8 a.m.
The company manufactures paints, rubber linings and polymers.
"Rubber in there, lot of chemicals stored in 55 gallons drums," said Larry Browne, a Doylestown firefighter, who noted that the materials helped fuel the fire that engulfed the 55,000 square-foot facility.
"It's hard to believe," said Jeff Warren, a 33-year employee. "What's going to happen? Are they going to rebuild? Are they not going to? I don't know."
Investigators said they didn't know how the fire started, but thought it began in a side section of the building.
"That was a storage area where parts got blasted," explained Warren, adding that the company manufactured industrial coating that covers everything from tanker trucks to water treatment systems.
The company's owner said 27 people work inside the building, which is a total loss. He hopes to have three other buildings nearby up and running soon so people can get back to work.
"I'm sure we can do some things, but it won't be the entire process," said Warren. "I guess mostly we will just have to wait."
The building was empty, and aside from a non-fire-related injury to a fireman, no one was hurt.
