PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia's two largest newspapers will shed another 37 newsroom jobs by next month.

Philadelphia Media Network operates The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com. Economic conditions are forcing the cuts, said company spokesman Mark Block.

Hedge funds bought the newspapers in a 2010 bankruptcy auction, and may be trying to sell them.

The Newspaper Guild said the cuts will "decimate" its "already-shrunken ranks." The union said the company has about 400 editorial employees, about half the 1980s peak.

More employees will be producing work for both of the once-competing newspapers and the website, Block said.

The cuts follow word of a possible sale and union complaints that stories about it have been censored.

Former Gov. Ed Rendell leads a group of powerful newsmakers who want to buy the company.
