The City of Philadelphia will pick up the tab for the funeral expenses of a Philadelphia police officer killed in a robbery while walking home after his shift.
City officials say they determined Officer Moses Walker Jr. died in the line of duty when he was shot and killed Aug. 18.
A city spokesman tells The Philadelphia Inquirer officials have a process to determine if an officer or firefighter was killed in the line of duty and that decision takes time. Mayor Michael Nutter informed Walker's family of the decision on Thursday.
Because Walker was killed in the line of duty the city pays $15,000 in funeral expenses. His survivors are also entitled to his pension and other benefits.
Two men are charged in Walker's death.
