Police release photo of suspect in killing of girlfriend

POTTSTOWN, Pa. -

Authorities have now put a face to the man they said they're looking for in connection with the killing of his girlfriend.

Edwin Carrero phoned his ex-wife early Thursday morning and told her he may have killed his girlfriend, Alicia Schmidt, inside her home at 424 Cherry St. in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., said District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.

During their conversation, Carrero, 32, told his ex-wife, Nicole, that he choked Schmidt, 31, and pushed her down the basement steps, Ferman said.

Carrero's ex-wife then called police, who responded to the home and found Schmidt dead at the bottom of the basement stairs, officials said. An autopsy done Friday morning determined she was strangled, the Montgomery County coroner said.

Schmidt's two children, ages 7 and 12, were found unharmed in second floor bedrooms, police said.

Anyone with information about the homicide or Carrero's whereabouts is asked to contact Pottstown police at 610-970-6570 or Montgomery County Detectives at 610-278-3368.
