In Montgomery Co., Souderton school leaders plan to announce which of the district's elementary schools is closing on Wednesday night. Parents though, are promising a fight.
Lower Salford Elementary has been a staple in Harleysville for a century, but parents here believe the school's days are numbered.
"It's pervasive in this community that this school is closing," said parent Andrea Farina.
Wednesday night, Souderton Area school leaders plan to announce which one of the district's seven elementary schools will close.
"We're not sure what's happening," said parent Jennifer Heckman.
But many parents said all signs point to it being this one.
"It's a great school, great teachers, great principal," said parent Leslie Gabriel. "I would really hate to see it shut down."
School leaders have said they have to close one school because the district simply doesn't have enough students to fill seven elementary schools anymore. A Pennsylvania Economy League study found the district will lose 12 percent of its elementary-age population over the next five years.
Parents' groups, including one called "Lower Salford SOS," are challenging those numbers.
"We have counter-information from the township supervisor in Harleysville that proves they're inaccurate," said Farina.
Souderton administrators point to another recent study shows several other schools are underutilized, and fixing-up Lower Salford's aging campus would cost too much.
"This parent group really believes it's about cutting teachers," said Farina.
Still, for Harleysville parents -- many of whom went there themselves -- it's a tough pill to swallow.
"My child has another year left. This is a wonderful school," said Heckman.
The district's Operations Committee will announce which school is slated for closure Wednesday night at 6:30 at the high school auditorium.
