A fire claimed the lives of a woman and her 7-year-old son in Chester County early Tuesday morning, officials said.
The fire broke out just after midnight in the 500 block of East Chestnut Street in Coatesville. It quickly spread to two neighboring homes as it went to three alarms.
Eight people were rescued from the rooftops, but Elizabeth Izquierdo or her son Imanol were trapped inside the home where the fire started.
The Red Cross sheltered 38 people for at least part of the overnight, said officials, adding that some of the displaced residents were awaiting word on whether they could return to their homes.
Izquierdo's home didn't have working smoke detectors, said Red Cross officials.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
