Woman gets 8 years for stealing $1 M, kidnapping hoax

PHILADELPHIA -

A woman will have plenty of time to think about the hoax carjacking and fleeing to Disney World with her daughter. She was sentenced to more than eight years

Bonnie Sweeten, of Feasterville, was sentenced Thursday to more than eight years in prison for stealing more than $1 million from her employer before calling in a hoax carjacking and fleeing to Disney World with her young daughter.

Sweeten, 40, triggered a nationwide search in 2009 when she told a 911 operator she and her 9-year-old daughter had been kidnapped.

Authorities said she fled before she could be arrested for swindling her boss and an elderly relative. She spent a year in prison for the fake 911 call.

Sweeten told the judge before her sentencing Thursday she did what it took to pay for in vitro treatments after a second marriage, an upscale house and other luxuries.

Sweeten pleaded guilty June 21, 2011, to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

In addition to the 100-month prison term, U.S. District Court Judge William H. Yohn, Jr., ordered Sweeten to pay restitution in the amount of $1,091,831 and a special assessment of $200.

Sweeten has already spent more than a year in prison.
