Officer hit by vehicle, hurt, while helping stranded motorist on Route 309

Officer hit by car in Bucks Co.

WEST ROCKHILL TWP., Pa. - A police officer was hit by a vehicle while he and another officer were helping a stranded motorist on Route 309, officials said.

The accident happened around 8 p.m. Thursday on Route 309, between Sellersville and Perkasie, in West Rockhill Twp., Bucks Co.

The two officers were assisting the driver of a minivan that became disabled when it hit a tire that blew off an oversized tractor trailer, Pennridge Regional police said.

The minivan was partially blocking the southbound lane of Route 309, near Cathill Road when the officers responded.

As the officers stood on the side of the road, a car driven by an 83-year-old Telford resident hit the back of one of the patrol cars, said police, adding that the impact pushed the cruiser into the second patrol car, which hit Ofc. Pedro Ruiz.

Ruiz suffered knee injuries and was treated at Grand View Hospital and released, police said. The other officer was not hit or injured.

According to police, the vehicle that hit the patrol cars had three people inside.  Two were taken to Grand View Hospital.  One was rushed to the trauma center at St. Luke's University Hospital.

Route 309 was closed until 11 p.m., police said.
