2012: Joe Paterno, the head coach of the college football Penn State Nittany Lions from 1966 to 2011, dies of complications from lung cancer at the age of 85 in State College, Pennsylvania. With 409 victories, Paterno is the winningest coach in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision history. His career ended in 2011 with his dismissal from the team as a result of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal.
