2014: Louis Zamperini, a World War II veteran and POW and a member of the 1936 U.S. Olympic track and field team, dies of pneumonia at age 97 in Los Angeles, California. Zamperini wrote two memoirs about his life experiences and was the subject of Laura Hillenbrand's best selling 2010 biography "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption," which was adapated into a 2014 movie directed by Angelina Jolie.
