Patrick Quinn and Kelly Cunningham charged in 76 burglaries of vacant homes for sale

Pair charged in 76 burglaries

Police said they've caught a couple who went on a major crime spree.

The two are accused of breaking into 76 homes in four different counties.

Investigators said the crimes started Nov. 24, 2012, and went on until May 23, 2013, and the couple broke into the homes between the hours of 11:45 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The couple, Patrick Quinn, 27, of 2131 Riverside Dr., Lower Saucon Twp., Northampton Co., and Kelly Cunningham, 22, of 1843 Nancy Lee Court, Hellertown, Northampton Co., were going into homes that were for sale and stealing copper pipes, copper fittings and valves, and brass fittings and valves, said police, adding that the suspects would then sell the items to scrap yards.

"We are seeing a lot because when you look at the metals, metals are worth a lot of money today," said Sam Ruta, an associate broker at Prudential Choice Properties. "They can go and get a lot of money for dumping pounds and pounds of copper."

During the six-month crime spree, the couple burglarized 76 homes and had one attempted burglary, according to police records.

Twenty-five homes were in Lehigh County, 47 in Northampton County, one in Carbon County and four in Bucks County.

"It's more than I've heard and I have been doing this for over 30 years," said Ruta.

Investigators said the couple would look up real estate listings on their computer or their phone and then put the address in a GPS. Once they arrived, they got out and burglarized the place.

"I actually wanted to take action myself," said homeowner Mark Burke. "Go to the cops and everything but it was out of my hands. It wasn't my house at the time."

Burke moved into his home just four months ago. It was burglarized at the worst time.

"The copper was stolen maybe three weeks before the closing and it really put a damper on everything because it just slowed down everything," said Burke. "It actually set back the closing on the house. I was really disappointed."

Police said the suspects got away with a little more than $205,000 before being caught when an alert scrap dealer called the police.

"Good thing that the community is looking out for what people are doing," said Trevor Watlington, who lives next to one home in Northampton County. "Seeing something is wrong and reporting about it."

Quinn and Cunningham were each charged with 76 counts of burglary, criminal trespass and three other charges.
