RINGTOWN, Pa. -

A man who refused to surrender while keeping his 2-year-old daughter with him has apparently killed himself inside his parents' home in Schuylkill County, authorities said.

The coroner plans an autopsy Friday on the body of 33-year-old Daniel Howard, though officials believe he died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

A state police special emergency response team surrounded the home in Ringtown early Thursday afternoon after a report that Howard was suicidal and refusing to leave the home with his child.

Authorities said they believe Howard shot himself about 4:45 p.m. after first releasing the child unharmed.

Police haven't said what prompted the standoff.

Howard was from Hazle Township.
