A former Monroe County government official has pleaded guilty to lying about health care benefits, according to federal officials.

Robert Spano, a former Middle Smithfield Twp. supervisor, pleaded guilty Thursday to make false statements in connection with health care benefits.

Prosecutors said Spano, 63, rang up $24,000 in health care expenses for a mistress from 2007 to 2010, falsely listing her as his spouse on the medical claim forms.

Spano faces up to five years in prison.

A sentencing date has not been set.
