A woman in a wheelchair was struck by a car at Lehigh and Broad streets, near the Our Family Mini-Mart, in Tamaqua, Schuylkill Co.

The impact caused the woman, identified as Debra Althouse, to be thrown from her wheelchair, according to Tamaqua police. She was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown for treatment of a moderate injury to her left leg.

Althouse, 57, of Tamaqua, told police she is blind, can only see shadows, and did not see the vehicle coming.

The driver of the car, Rae Ann Moyer, 45, of Tamaqua, told police she did not see Althouse as she turned the coroner from Broad onto Lehigh.

Althouse, Moyer said, was crossing the street at an angle from the area of the mini-mart's driveway. Police determined a planter in the mini-mart parking lot blocked the driver's view of the woman in the wheelchair.

Witness Dorothy Moyer, of Tamaqua, said she previously helped Althouse across the street because she was having trouble getting onto the sidewalk.

No citations were issued to either party by Tamaqua police.
