A Monroe County man is behind bars on attempted homicide and arson charges.

Joseph Shuman set fire to a home in the 1300 of Winding Way in Coolbaugh Township early Thursday morning, police said.

Investigators subsequently learned that Shuman was involved in a domestic dispute with one of the home's residents earlier in the evening.

Before setting the fire, police said Shuman removed the electric meter on the side of the home, shutting off power, and poured gasoline around the front and back doors.

Loss of power to the home put the four residents in greater danger because all of them are deaf and rely on special flash alarms to alert them to a fire, police said.

Everyone inside did manage to make it out unharmed.

Shuman, 24, of Tobyhanna, was later arrested and charged with four counts each of attempted homicide and recklessly endangering another person and two counts of arson.
