Car of missing local man found in North Carolina

An elderly Monroe County man goes missing and another man is found driving his car in North Carolina.

Now, while investigators talk to that man friends and family of Joseph DeVivo, 87, are trying to stay positive.

"We don't know exactly where he went who he might have gone with," said DeVivo's son Joseph.

The retired teacher went missing from his home Saturday.

His car was found hundreds of miles away in North Carolina.

"There was an individual taken into custody that was operating that vehicle and the homicide investigators in Charlotte-Mecklenburg are talking with him," said Lt. Brian Kimmins with the Stroud Area Regional Police.

The last time anyone saw DeVivo was Thursday.

He went out to eat at a local diner and was dropped off at home by a caretaker.

Hours after DeVivo was reported missing and his car found police and search crews combed the area looking for him.

Missing posters now hang all over town.

"We are shocked and heartbroken we are just so worried about him where he is," said neighbor Diana Lamendola.

Devivo's family is waiting by the phone hoping the man in custody will help police to return DeVivo home safe and sound.

A birthday card DeVivo mailed to one of his granddaughters last week is also waiting.

"We haven't opened that card we've held onto it in the hopes that when the family is reunited he'd be able to hand deliver it to my daughter," said DeVivo. "You can't give up hope you have to keep hoping that the story is going to have a happy ending."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Stroud Area Regional Police at (570) 421-6800.
