Demolition work starts at Schuylkill mall

The mall announced plans to close down in May

Crews start work to demolish...

FRACKVILLE, Pa - On this sprawling plot parking spaces sit empty as a once thriving Schuylkill mall is torn down and heavy equipment is making quick work of it.

"Everything is bad up here everything is terrible in Schuylkill county.," said Frackville resident, Linda Dondore.

The mall announced plans to close down in May as a mere 12 business sat open. Dondore remembers when the mall opened in 1980, "Everything was open, the stores were open, then you could see the decline," she added.

People living in the community say it's kind of sad but it's nothing compared to what this means economically. The money people spent here stayed in the community and now people are driving longer distances to other malls.

"Right now we have to go to the Sunberry in Sullensgrove which is probably a 39 mile trip one way," said Karl Kort.

Residents say job growth is already in bad shape and this latest blow just adds to that.
It's not clear what's going to take the malls spot but many hope it will be something that brings jobs to the area.
