ESU to welcome 13th president this summer

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education has chosen the next person to lead East Stroudsburg University.

The board of governors on Thursday chose Marcia Welsh as E.S.U.'s 13th president.

Welsh, who currently serves as provost and vice presidents for academics at Towson University, will assume her new duties at E.S.U. on July 1.

Welsh will succeed Robert Dillman, who is retiring after 16 years as president.

"Dr. Welsh has outstanding credentials and an excellent record as an academic leader," said Guido M. Pichini, chairman of the board of governors and president of Berks County-based Security Guards Inc. "We are confident she will continue that record as she assumes the leadership of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania during these extremely challenging times."

Welsh was named provost of Towson University in Maryland 2009. She also served as interim president of the university for nine months during 2011.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be selected as the next president of East Stroudsburg University," Welsh said. "I look forward to working closely with the E.S.U. community, both on campus and off, to build upon the tremendous legacy of the university. I thank the board of governors and Chancellor [John] Cavanaugh for the opportunity to help shape the future of E.S.U. and to become part of the E.S.U. family."

Welsh earned both her undergraduate degree in physical sciences and master's degree in anatomy from Colorado State University and her doctoral degree in anatomy from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

She began her academic career in 1978 at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, remaining there for 23 years.

Welsh was named senior vice president for academic affairs and provost of Adelphi University in 2001, a position she held for seven years before moving on to Towson.
