SHENANDOAH, Pa. - Police have arrested a man in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found inside a home in Schuylkill County on Tuesday.
Luis Ramos Nunez-Calderon was arrested without incident Wednesday evening in New York City.
The body of Wendy Contreras-Hernandez was found inside 518 W. Centre St. in Shenandoah around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
According to a police affidavit, Nunez-Calderon, 41, was Contreras-Hernandez's ex-boyfriend, and police had been called to the Centre Street home around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a domestic dispute.
After police arrived on the scene, they found neither Nunez-Calderon nor Contreras-Hernandez.
School officials called Lydia Contreras after Contreras-Hernandez, 38, didn't pick up her daughter at school, police said, and when the two arrived at the Centre Street house, they found Wendy Contreras-Hernandez's body on the bathroom floor.
Police said she died of an apparent stab wound to the neck, and a search showed a knife missing from a butcher block in the kitchen.
Several neighbors told police they were aware of prior domestic disputes between the couple. One man said he had provided a place for the victim to stay for several days based on her fear that Nunez-Calderon would return to her house and hurt her, police said.
Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said Nunez-Calderon approached two men at the Burger King in Shenandoah and tried to get them to drive him to Hazleton, Luzerne County. The men said he had blood on him, and they turned down his request, police said.
A man at a bar across the street from the Burger King told police he drove Nunez-Calderon to the C&G Transport at 981 Church St. in Hazleton, and a C&G driver told police he took the suspect to an address in North Manhattan, in New York City.
During the ride, the driver said Nunez-Calderon's clothes were bloody, and he was crying, saying he needed to talk to his mother, police said.
Nunez-Calderon is originally from the Bronx, New York, but was last known to live at the Centre Street address.
The state police and the Schuylkill County coroner's officer are conducting the homicide investigation.
Nunez-Calderon is now facing criminal homicide, murder, aggravated assault, voluntary manslaughter and related charges.
Arrangements are being made to bring him back to Pennsylvania.
