POCONO TWP., Pa. - The countdown is on until the wraps come off a newer and bigger option for education in Monroe County.
Northampton Community College is putting the finishing touches on its new Monroe campus in Tannersville.
Summer classes begin in July.
The new campus of about 80 acres is less than two miles from the current campus.
It's bigger and will be able to serve more students and offer more programs.
It will be able to accommodate 5,000 students, compared to the 2,000 at the current location.
"I'm feeling very excited and optimistic about what the new campus will offer," said Matt Connell, Dean of the Monroe campus. "We've been spreading the word that we'll be open soon and we welcome all Monroe County residents and residents of the region to come here and take a class, a program."
"We'll be offering some training in technology, we'll be offering some education programs in computer science that we can't offer at the current campus, we'll be offering electronics technology and physics classes," Connell added.
Besides new classrooms and laboratories, the campus has a larger library, food area, gym, and fitness center.
"This is, I think, one of the jewels of the campus," Connell said in a tiered lecture hall that seats 72.
All of the new space will allow the school to train a workforce to serve the region.
He said, "We welcome all individuals to come to this campus and experience this beautiful site."
