Police investigate death of Schuylkill County official's estranged husband

Police investigate death of...

RYAN TWP., Pa. - State police are investigating the death of the husband of the Schuylkill County treasurer.

Attorney Gary Marchalk, 60, was found dead Monday morning in his bedroom in his Ryan Township home by one of his sons, police said.

An autopsy is set for Wednesday but as of Tuesday afternoon, police are treating his death as a homicide.

"His son tried to contact him on Father's Day, didn't have any contact. Went to check on him, didn't hear from him, didn't respond to text messages," said Lt. Scott Brennan of the Pennsylvania State Police.

Police say Marchalk is the estranged husband of  Schuylkill County Treasurer Linda Marchalk, who investigators say was not living in the home.

"We treat all death investigations as homicides until we can prove differently," Brennan said.

Marchalk himself was a well-known attorney in Tamaqua.

Nathan Gerace is Tamaqua's sole candidate for mayor in November.

"It's a great loss, it really is," he said.

Gerace described Marchalk as very involved within the community, and said he'd often see him at Chamber of Commerce meetings.

"As soon as he walked in the room he'd be smiling and come over and crack a joke and ask how everybody was doing. He was guy who generally cared and a good conversationalist," Gerace said.

Police are keeping details slim.

The autopsy is Wednesday, at which time police will make a determination if this was a homicide.

69 News reached out to Linda Marchalk but have not heard back.
