PENN FOREST TWP., Pa. - Several people, including children, were injured after a deck collapsed Tuesday evening in Carbon County.
The collapse, which happened at around 5:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Towamensing Trail in Penn Forest Township, interrupted a child's birthday party.
According to Chief Bruce Miller with Penn Forest Township Volunteer Fire Company Number One, the deck of the house was not properly constructed and was not up to code.
He says nails were used where there should have been bolts and washers.
Six people were injured and some were airlifted from the scene after a second floor deck collapsed on the front of the house.
The injured were pinned underneath and have injuries ranging from a leg fracture to spinal injuries to a head injury.
The children range in age from seven to 13.
Judy Bonislawski, a neighbor, said the house is a rental property and she was startled when she heard the loud noise over her vacuum.
"All of a sudden you heard this loud, loud noise, really loud noise, and I looked out of my window and I could see half the deck down but then I came down and saw that the whole deck had crashed. It was a little girl's birthday party," she said.

"I could just see half the deck was down and I thought oh my gosh, I came down to look and walked over to check everybody to see if if everybody was OK, and people under the deck were stuck," said Bonislawski.
"I feel bad for them. The little girls were so shook up. They were so, so upset and scared. One little girl had, her head was cut and one little girl, her leg was hurt.
"It was scary, very very scary. Everybody that was coming by was in shock looking at it. It was unbelievable," she added.
There is no word on the conditions of the injured children and adults.
Miller says it is a civil matter, not a criminal matter.
