Skeletal remains found in Schuylkill County could be missing person

Human remains found by hikers

NEW CASTLE TWP., Pa. - Officials in Schuylkill County are investigating to determine if skeletal remains found by hikers on Thursday are those of a local man who went missing back in 2011.

Two hikers found the remains near I-81 and Route 61 in New Castle Township.

Officials say testing is being conducted to determine if the remains are those of Kevin Lucas, of Gordon, who was 33-years-old when he went missing back in 2011.

Schuylkill County Coroner David Moylan said about 55 bones were collected from the area just off of Route 61.

Investigators believe the remains are a few years old.

"Anything is on the table at this point. The forensic osteologist will be going over the bones to look for any kinds of trauma," Moylan said

Three years ago, less than a mile away, a man walking his dog came across a human tibia.
DNA testing linked that bone to Lucas.

Years passed and several searches were carried out. But nothing else turned up.

Could this find tell us more about the unsolved death of Kevin Lucas?

"It's a little bit too early," Moylan said. "We'll probably have to go through an attempt of DNA and dental records to link the two."

Moylan said it will be about a month before investigators can identify the remains and answer those questions.
