Tip from Facebook staff leads to arrest of East Stroudsburg man for child porn

POCONO TOWNSHIP, Pa. - An East Stroudsburg man accused of possessing child pornography was arrested Friday morning following a tip from Facebook staff, according to Monroe County authorities.

Authorities say in late April the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children got a tip from Facebook staff about a Facebook user trading child pornography with other users through Facebook’s private messaging service.

That tip was then forwarded to the Monroe County District Attorney’s cybercrime unit, who, along with the Pocono Township Police Department, eventually uncovered William Garris, Jr. was allegedly using his cell phone to send and receive the child pornography.

On Friday morning and armed with a warrant for Garris’ phone, detectives from the DA’s office went to  Garris’ place of employment, located in Pocono Township, and checked his phone.

Detectives say they discovered one video and six photographs of child pornography, depicting children as young as five years old.

Garris was charged with several counts of disseminating and possessing child pornography, as well as criminal use of a communication facility and is in custody in the Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail.
