Wreck in Carbon County claims two lives

FRANKLIN TWP., Pa. - The Labor Day weekend is already proving deadly on area roads. A crash killed two people and critically injured a third person early Sunday morning in Carbon County. Tourists at a nearby campground rushed to the scene to help the victims.

"We all thought it was like a train passing by," said Beata Bak, who was camping just yards away at Kriss Pines, a campground catering to Polish tourists. "It was really, really close. We didn't hear no brakes, like they didn't hit no brakes."

The wreck happened on a remote stretch of Forest Street in Franklin Township around 2:15, according to police. They said an SUV with New Jersey plates lost control rounding a curve, crashed into several boulders and trees, then flipped over. Two passengers were killed while another was in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

Amazingly witnesses said the driver, who they described as a middle aged man, survived with only minor injuries.

"He was walking a little bit, bruise here and on the forehead," said Bak.

Franklin Township Police said the accident cause is still under investigation. The Carbon Co. coroner has not identified the two people who died yet.

At the crash scene, a lone candle now sits among scattered debris, including sunglasses an envelope of mail -- remnants of two lives cut tragically short.

Many campers were too torn up to talk on camera about what they saw. In fact, some even said they're ending their Labor Day vacation early because of it.

"It's a tragedy," said Bak. "Just can't really think straight right now. It's horrible."
