Police: 17-year-old shot was unintended target

A 17-year-old student from Reading is recovering in the hospital after she was hit by a stray bullet on the way home from school.

The gunfire erupted around 3:45 p.m. in the 600 block of North 11th Street, Tuesday afternoon.

Two boys were fighting when, suddenly, a shot was fired, and the 17-year-old girl was hit in the leg, police said.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, and investigators say her injuries are non-life threatening.

Parents who live in the block where the crime occurred are demanding answers.

"We actually fear coming out here anymore," said Dawn Haage.

"My kids right now are terrified," said Nicole Vasquez. "I spent half the night up with them last night because they're terrified now to come outside. They're terrified to be even in their own home."

No arrests have been made and police say this case is still under investigation.
