Police arrest unwanted hotel guest for assault

The drunken Virginia man also allegedly damaged the lobby ceiling

S. WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Authorities allege that a Virginia man who had been kicked out of a Lehigh County hotel earlier in the day returned later, punching another guest in the head and damaging the lobby ceiling.

Marquis D. Jiggetts, of South Hill, Va., faces simple assault and disorderly conduct charges for the incident inside a South Whitehall Township Comfort Suites early Friday morning. Police also charged the 38-year-old with summary counts of public drunkenness, criminal mischief and harassment.

South Whitehall Township police were dispatched to the hotel at 3712 Hamilton Blvd. just before 1 a.m. for a 911 hang-up. The caller eventually called back to report a man damaging the lobby.

The night manager told police that Jiggetts had come into the lobby boasting about how he had just gotten into a fight and then began damaging the lobby ceiling, according to court records. An officer saw the broken ceiling tile on the floor.

The manager provided police with a description of Jiggetts, who had run into the elevator to an unknown room. Staff told police that he had been thrown out of the hotel earlier, but returned. Court records don't indicate why he was thrown out.

Shortly after Jiggetts ran from the lobby, his roommate emerged and told police where to find him.

Police said an agitated Jiggetts had bloodshot eyes and refused to sit down. The victim had what authorities described as "massive bruising" on the left side of his head and was bleeding.

District Judge Wayne Maura arraigned Jiggetts Friday morning, setting bail at $25,000. He failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for Oct. 21.
